Velvet Goldmine (1998) is a film directed & co-written by Todd Haynes. the story follows a British journalist (Christian Bale) who has to research his have retiring whenever writing an article just about early-1970s rock stars for an American periodical. Jonathan Rhys-Meyers (Bend It Like Beckham) had his feature debut swimming the role of Brian Slade, a pansexual folk minstrel-cum-glitter icon patterned after David Bowie. Ewan McGregor co-stars in the role of Curt Wild, the glam-rock performing artist world health organization doesn't back down from either sex, nudeness or even even doses in or off stage, & whom numerous assume to become loosely according to Iggy Pop, with the dash of Lou Reed. Too featured come Toni Collette (The Sixth Sense) as Slade's married woman & Eddie Izzard as his manager.
A tale strongly parallels Bowie & Pop's relationship in the '70s & '80s, using parallel stages around two stories including "folk singer takes illegal substances" & "open-minded glam rocker becomes bland straight guy." Brian Slade's gradually overwhelming in-stage persona of "Maxwell Demon" & his backing band, "Venus in Furs", also bear the resemblance to Bowie's similar persona & backing band, Ziggy Stardust and the Spiders from Mars. A film's plot turns Bowie's paranoia of existence murdered when you took the concert (a paranoia that Bowie visited upon the Ziggy Stardust character in the climax of the Ziggy Stardust album) into the career-ending publicity stunt by Slade. A film is as well strongly influenced per ideas & life of Oscar Wilde (seen here as a primogenitor of glam rock), with the dash of Jean Genet influence.
A title of a picture show will require its title from either the B-side of one of Bowie's singles, originally written as a rather grownup description of him making out with another human. Social pressures concerted by using an sole-half-hearted interest in a lesson got Bowie rewriting the song to become slightly further ambiguous. A film's title will too exist as meant as an allusion to the title of the band The Velvet Underground. Moreover, "Maxwell Demon" was the title of Brian Eno's first band. "Venus in Furs" is the information to the Velvet Underground song of the equivalent title, whose title & lyrics successively reference a novel of that title by Leopold von Sacher-Masoch. A musicians world health organization played when Venus around Furs on the soundtrack were Radiohead's Thom Yorke and Jonny Greenwood, Bernard Butler, and Roxy Music's Andy Mackay. A musicians world health organization played when Curt Untamed's Wylde Ratttz on the soundtrack were the Stooges's Ron Asheton, Sonic Youth's Thurston Moore and Steve Shelley, the Minutemen's Mike Watt, Gumball's Don Fleming, and Mark Arm of Mudhoney fame. A tercet members of the band Placebo also appeared in the film, Brian Molko and Steve Hewitt playing members of the "Flaming Creatures" & Stefan Olsdal playing Polly Small's bassist.
